Appliance Fault Codes

What that error code means — and what you can safely check

Siemens washing machine error codes

Siemens (BSH group, with Bosch and Neff) washing machines show E-number codes. E17 and E18 are the two most commonly reported by UK owners; others appear on specific model lines.

CodeMeaningSeverityFirst action
E17Water inlet faultOften fixable at homeWater is not entering the machine within the expected time — supply, tap or inlet valve fault.
E18Drain faultOften fixable at homeThe machine could not drain within the expected time, so water is left in the drum.
E23Leak detected (AquaStop)Usually fixable at homeWater has been detected in the base tray — the AquaStop protection triggered.
E32Unbalanced loadUsually fixable at homeThe load could not be balanced for the spin, so spinning was reduced or cancelled.
E36Door lock faultOften fixable at homeThe door lock did not close or report closed, so the programme will not start.

Safety first

Unplug before any check. Never open panels beyond the filter flap. Anything involving internal wiring, the heater or gas must go to a professional — see each code page for its "call a professional when" line.
