Tumble dryer will not start
A silent tumble dryer is most often a door-latch problem or no power — both safe to check before calling anyone.
Likely causes, ranked
- Door not fully closed / faulty door switch Most likely — Dryers will not run with an unlocked door. A worn latch or failed switch silently blocks start (Samsung dE, Hotpoint F06).
- No power to the dryer Likely — Tripped breaker, RCD or blown socket. Test the socket with another appliance.
- Water tank full or drain fault Likely — Condenser dryers refuse to start with a full tank; Samsung 5E also covers drain faults.
- Control board fault Less likely — Lights dead or flashing across the board — Hotpoint F01/F12, Samsung 9E1. Try a 2-minute unplugged reset first.
First checks
- Check the door clicks shut firmly.
- Test the socket with another appliance and check the breaker.
- Empty the water tank (condenser models).
- Reset: unplug for 2 minutes, wait 30 seconds, restart.
- Try a different programme — some eco cycles look unresponsive at start.
Safety
Unplug before checking behind the dryer. Never bypass a door switch.
Call a professional when…
Power, door and tank all check out and the dryer stays dead — the door switch or control board needs an engineer.
